What is the difference between repowering and revamping ?

In the photovoltaic sector, there are two main approaches to extending the lifetime of an installation : 

REPOWERING

This involves replacing existing modules with more powerful ones, which often means adapting structures, wiring and sometimes even electrical connection conditions. In most cases, the purchase contract is terminated. 

REVAMPING

The idea is to replace the modules with new panels while maintaining as much of the initial output as possible in order to continue to benefit from the advantageous tariffs under the old purchase contracts. The aim is to free up land.

At Synapsun, we have coined the term retrovamping to describe a specific approach to replacing photovoltaic modules on existing power plants. This involves replacing some or all of the modules with models of similar size and power, with the aim of preserving the existing structures, wiring and electrical design as far as possible.

This method, designed as a like-for-like replacement that is, on a one-for-one basis allows to :

  • Limit the costs associated with modifying mounting structures or inverters.
  • Avoid the complex administrative procedures often required for structural or power modifications.
  • Preserve the old feed-in tariffs, where still applicable.
